Understanding the CMS QSO: Auditing of Schizophrenia Diagnosis & Antipsychotic Use as well as Posting Citations Under Dispute

As part of the continuing efforts under President Biden’s initiative to improve nursing home transparency, safety and quality, and accountability, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the CMS announced new actions on January 18, 2023 to reduce the inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications and to bring greater transparency about nursing home citations to families. This session will review the CMS QSO related to schizophrenia diagnosis and antipsychotic use, the CMS audit process, and changes to the Care Compare site to include the new postings of citations under dispute. In addition, resources for non-pharmacological approaches for managing resident behaviors will be provided.

This publicly facing snapshot of quality is gaining more traction with consumers as well as commercial payors. This session will go beyond the 5 Star manual criteria and definitions to share solutions, approaches and resources for operators to maintain and improve ratings. No matter your status it is imperative that operators maintain awareness of changes and opportunities for the highest rating.

COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT FORUM – VIRTUAL SESSION

Nursing Facilities are one of the most heavily regulated types of health care entities in the country and must comply with a multitude of state and federal laws and regulations. It is important for nursing facility providers to understand the current enforcement environment on the both the state and federal level related to these laws and regulations. This session will discuss:
